Motorsport Physio Fitness

Motorsport Physio Fitness is a company dedicated to maximising human performance in motorsport through optimisation of physical and mental capacity.

No matter what level of motorsport you’re competing in, increased fitness levels can help to increase energy levels, improve concentration, decrease muscle fatigue and body fat composition, prevent injury and ultimately improve lap times!

Motorsport requires high levels of physical and mental fitness in order to compete at the highest level. Team members as well as drivers/riders would benefit massively from this new innovative service.

Through structured tailor-made fitness programs, physiotherapy treatment, nutritional advice and psychology techniques, all individuals can maximise their potential. In a sport where tenths of a second matter no stone can be left unturned in the quest to maximise performance.

Services:  

  • Individual consultations to discuss requirements and set goals for the season.
  • Physiotherapy assessment and treatment of any musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Treatment techniques include remedial and sports massage, soft tissue techniques, manipulation, exercise therapy, stretching, cryotherapy, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, biomechanical assessments and gait analysis.
  • Motorsport specific fitness assessments, using the latest Sports Science equipment and techniques in a laboratory. This will include strength, endurance, cognitive and body fat testing (see more info below).

 

  • Fitness programs specifically designed for each individual.
  • Therapist lead fitness sessions for an individual or group.
  • Seminars.
  • Nutritional advice.
  • Psychological training to improve focus, reaction time and concentration. This can include mental rehearsal of the ‘perfect lap’.

Regular monitoring will take place in order to check progress and achievement of goals. These services can be provided at race meetings, the client’s home, a team headquarters. The service will be tailored to suit the individual/team, which will dictate the overall cost.

It may be that you just want some advice to help with training/injuries or you may want input at the race weekends and during the whole season. It can be arranged for me to work closely (1-2 times a week) with individuals throughout the year building their fitness levels during pre-season and throughout the racing season.

Fitness testing

V0 2max test (1-2hrs)

This is a maximal test of cardio-vascular endurance and muscular efficiency. It will be performed on a rowing machine, hand bike or treadmill and will assess the level of oxygen uptake per minute, per kilogram body weight. During the test we will also analyse blood lactate levels which will allow us to define the individual’s exact heart rate training zones, for use throughout the season. This is the gold standard test for assessing overall fitness and is used by elite athletes throughout the world.

Body fat composition (45mins-1hr)

We will analyse the amount of body fat on each individual using specialist equipment and techniques. This will give us an objective measurement for the amount of body fat, allowing comparison with norms and elite athletes. It will also highlight key areas of fat deposition, as it varies for individual athletes. Through correct training we will make the individual’s leaner, whilst increasing strength.

Strength testing (1hr)

This will involve maximal testing of the main muscles involved in motorsport. This will provide a baseline from which to improve from and will allow us to check progress. Obviously, the stronger the muscles the more ease with which driving/riding can be performed, allowing more attention to other areas.

Cognitive testing (1hr)

This is concerned with testing the individual’s mental abilities. Some of the most important attributes any rider/driver can have is fast reaction times, excellent spatial awareness, concentration, focus and the ability to process lots of information in a short space of time. In this test we will analyse the individual’s ability to react to different stimuli in their environment over a prolonged period of time (simulating a race). Specific sessions focused on cognitive abilities will be incorporated into the clients training program, as it is fundamental to maximising performance.

 

Example program for season

Below is an example of how Motorsport Physio Fitness may work with a rider/driver throughout the season:

  • 2-3 Fitness tests a season involving all of the above.
  • Attend race weekends providing exercise sessions, fitness programs, physiotherapy/sports massage, ensuring the correct nutritional intake and working on mental preparation.
